Communication Manager DS1 tests
Helpful information about the important DS1 card tests and what they mean
Today many Avaya systems have ISDN-PRI or SIP to PRI handoff type trunks where the carrier brings in a SIP circuit but uses some type of SBC to convert from SIP to a T1/DS1 interface. The DS1 interface (Avaya MM710) for media gateways, that terminates these circuits will sometimes go into an error state. These errors can be seen in the Communication Manager SAT interface by using the "list measurements ds1 summary xyz" where x is the gateway and y is the slot the DS1 media module is inserted into. The output on an error-free board should show all 0s as shown in the graphic:

If the board does show errors or if the trunk seems to be out of service or dropping calls, use the "test board xvy" to diagnose what might be causing the errors:

Tests 138 thru 1227 are indicators of where the problem exists. Below are the summarized descriptions of these tests:

Test 138

Loss of Signal Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates the physical link is down / check cabling and smart jack / may need to run a loopback test / Manifests as trunk group members out of service.

Test 139

Blue Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates the far end or remote DS1 endpoint is either out of service or in a loopback state / may need to contact the carrier /Manifests as trunk group members out of service.

Test 140

Red Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates a loss of framing or out of frame state / If this is a newly installed DS1, and the condition is persistent, check to ensure the framing that is configured on the DS1 board matches what the carrier is configured for; otherwise, report the out of frame condition to the carrier / If the condition is sporadic, may Manifest as Occasional dropped calls

Test 141

Yellow Alarm Inquiry Test / Like Test 140 Failure indicates a loss of framing or out of frame state / If this is a newly installed DS1, check to ensure the framing that is configured on the DS1 board matches what the carrier is configured for; otherwise, report the out of frame condition to the carrier / Manifests as dropped calls or trunk group members going into and out of service

Test 142

Major Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates the DS1 bit error rate (as seen on the list measurements ds1 summary xvy above)is greater than 1/1000 which means the DS1 link condition is very poor / If carrier says they are testing good to the smart jack, a loopback test may be necessary to rule out any problem conditions at the customer premise / Manifests as numerous dropped calls

Test 143

Minor Alarm Inquiry Test / Similar to Test 142, failure of this test indicates the DS1 bit error rate (as seen on the list measurements ds1 summary xvy above)is greater than 1/1,000,000 but less than 1/1000 which means the DS1 link condition is poor / If carrier says they are testing good to the smart jack, a loopback test may be necessary to rule out any problem conditions at the customer premise. This will manifest as occasional dropped calls or loss of your ISDN signaling group.

Test 144

Slip Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates that transmit and receive signal are not running at exactly the same rate / This is most often caused by failure to set the sync source or the sync source that is set is in a faulted state / Manifests as an occasional dropped call, but more numerous reports of failed fax and modem transmission / Check to ensure carrier provided circuit /s are set as the sync source per PN or MG as shown in the graphic below:

Test 145

Misframe Alarm Inquiry Test / Failure indicates the DS1 board detected errors in the received framing bits pattern / monitor to see if the condition is persistent by waiting 15 minutes and testing board again, also use the "list measurements ds1 summary xvy" to see if the condition is still occurring in the current interval / If the condition is persistent you will want to report it to the carrier. This will manifest as dropped calls at a rate proportionate to the failure count

Test 146

Translation Update Test / Failure indicates an internal system software error / ensure the translations of the DS1 board are added successfully after inserting the media module or board, or removed from the software before removing the media module or board on a permanent basis. If the board or mm is being replaced, there is no need to remove it from software first

Test 1227

ICSU Status LEDs Test / This test requires a visual check to see if the LEDs on the integrated CSU are working / test has no bearing on serviceability of the circuit
