Problem Statement
A fax device is unable to reliably send or receive faxes after a service or network change. The device may show a red check-status light and report that the network cable is not connected or that it cannot detect the fax line. Outbound faxes may remain in progress for an extended period and then fail with hang-up or line-fail errors.
Impact
Some users may be unable to send or receive faxes reliably. Outbound fax confirmations may be delayed for hours and ultimately return failures, causing repeated retries and business communication delays.
Alarm
Network Cable not connected; cannot detect fax line; hang up line fail
Troubleshooting Steps
- Confirm the fax device is powered on and that all visible cables are fully seated at the fax device, wall jack, network port, ATA, or other fax service handoff device as applicable.
- Check the fax device display or status page for active errors such as network cable not connected, cannot detect fax line, hang up, or line fail.
- Verify whether the fax line or fax endpoint is configured and active on the voice/fax service side. Check for recent call or fax traffic to confirm the service is seeing activity from the device.
- If the service-side line is active and traffic is present, inspect the local network or physical cabling path. A cable error on the fax device can indicate a bad Ethernet cable, bad patch port, disconnected LAN handoff, or local network issue.
- Swap the fax device network cable with a known-good cable, if available. If no spare cable is available, request that local IT or onsite support provide one for testing.
- If the device was recently moved to a different network or service, confirm with local IT that the fax device is connected to the correct network port/VLAN and that the local network permits the required connectivity for the fax service.
- After replacing or reseating cabling, power-cycle the fax device and any local fax handoff equipment as appropriate, then send a controlled test fax.
- Collect the test result, timestamp, destination type, and any confirmation-page error text. If failures continue after local cable and network checks, escalate with the service provider and include the observed errors and test details.
Resolution
In this scenario, the fax line was confirmed configured and active from the service side, with traffic visible from the fax device. Because the device continued to report a cable-related error, the recommended resolution path was to test with a known-good network cable and involve local IT or onsite support to validate the local network connection. No carrier-side configuration fault was identified in the ticket.
